A Pumpkin for Pat
There once was a little girl named Pat, who was excited to go to the pumpkin patch at Frankie’s Farm. Pat, who had never picked a pumpkin at any sort of patch before, was determined to find the perfect pumpkin.
When Pat’s teacher told her that their class would be taking a field trip to Frankie’s Farm to pick pumpkins, Pat was ready to go.
“What kind of pumpkin do you want, Pat?” asked her friend Polly. “Aren’t pumpkins all the same?” she asked. “No way, Pat. Pumpkins are all different sizes, shapes, and shades!” “Then I want the perfect pumpkin,” said she.
When Polly and Pat got to Frankie’s Farm, she was amazed at all the different pumpkins she could see. She noticed right away all of the differences in the pumpkins. There baby pumpkins, giant pumpkins, yellow pumpkins, and brown ones, too. She found smooth pumpkins, and ones with bumpy sides. Some pumpkins had big stems, and others had fallen off.
Right away, Pat narrowed down her pumpkins. This one’s too big, she thought. This one is too bumpy. These over here are dirty, and the one he has is broken. On and on, she searched the rows of the patch until she found it - the perfect pumpkin.
Giddy and proud, Pat picked up the prettiest pumpkin she’d ever seen - just like in the pictures! She held the pumpkin and pet the pumpkin, so excited to show Polly that she found the perfect pumpkin.
Back on the school bus, Pat placed the picture perfect pumpkin on her lap and showed it off to Polly. “See how pretty it is? Just like in the pictures!” Polly took a good look at the pumpkin. She poked and prodded until she felt the bottom. “This pumpkin is awful soft, Pat. Didn’t you take a look a the inside?”
Pat was shocked. She had never been told to look on the inside of a pumpkin. Why did it matter? Polly took the pumpkin and opened it up. “Look Pat, it’s all rotten inside. You can’t make pumpkin pie of of this one.” Pat was so sad. How could she have missed the rotten insides of the pumpkin?
Polly noticed that Pat was upset. She told her, “Sometimes pumpkins are pretty on the outside, and look just like they do on TV. But you have to take a second look at things, Pat. Sometimes the things that look the sweetest, are rotten on the inside.” Pat was sad. She wanted to make pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pies with her pumpkin. ”Why don’t you come over to my house tonight and we can share my pumpkin?” Pat was so happy Polly had said that. “I’d love to!”
That night, Polly and Pat had a delicious feast of the sweet and delicious pumpkin Polly had picked. Pat had learned, that picture perfect wasn’t always the best - the best pumpkins are sweetest inside.
